House/Garden/Nation: Space, Gender, and Ethnicity in Post-Colonial Latin American Literatures by Women (Post-Contemporary Interventions)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 39.64 $How ironic, the author thought on learning of the Sandinista’s electoral defeat, that at its death the Revolutionary State left Woman, Violeta Chamorro, located at the center. The election signaled the end of one transition and the beginning of another, with Woman somewhere on the border between the neo-liberal and marxist projects. It is such transitions that Ileana Rodríguez takes up here, unraveling their weave of gender, ethnicity, and nation as it is revealed in literature written by women. In House/Garden/Nation the narratives of five Centro-Caribbean writers illustrate these times of transition: Dulce María Loynáz, from colonial rule to independence in Cuba; Jean Rhys, from colony to commonwealth in Dominica; Simone Schwarz-Bart, from slave to free labor in Guadeloupe; Gioconda Belli, from oligarchic capitalism to social democratic socialism in Nicaragua; and Teresa de la Parra, from independence to modernity in Venezuela. Focusing on the nation as garden, hacienda, or plantation, Rodríguez shows us these writers debating the predicament of women under nation formation from within the confines of marriage and home. In reading these post-colonial literatures by women facing the crisis of transition, this study highlights urgent questions of destitution, migration, exile, and inexperience, but also networks of value allotted to women: beauty, clothing, love. As a counterpoint on issues of legality, policy, and marriage, Rodriguez includes a chapter on male writers: José Eustacio Rivera, Omar Cabezas, and Romulo Gallegos. Her work presents a sobering picture of women at a crossroads, continually circumscribed by history and culture, writing their way.

Plautus: The Merchant. The Braggart Warrior. The Haunted House. The Persian. (Loeb Classical Library No. 163) (English and Latin Edition)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 113.89 $Plautus (Titus Maccius), born about 254 BCE at Sarsina in Umbria, went to Rome, engaged in work connected with the stage, lost his money in commerce, then turned to writing comedies. Twenty-one plays by Plautus have survived (one is incomplete). The basis of all is a free translation from comedies by such writers as Menander, Diphilus, and Philemon. So we have Greek manners of Athens about 300–250 BCE transferred to the Roman stage of about 225–185, with Greek places, people, and customs, for popular amusement in a Latin city whose own culture was not yet developed and whose manners were more severe. To make his plays live for his audience, Plautus included many Roman details, especially concerning slavery, military affairs, and law, with some invention of his own, notably in management of metres. The resulting mixture is lively, genial and humorous, with good dialogue and vivid style. There are plays of intrigue (Two Bacchises, The Haunted House, Pseudolus); of intrigue with a recognition theme (The Captives, The Carthaginian, Curculio); plays which develop character (The Pot of Gold, Miles Gloriosus); others which turn on mistaken identity (accidental as in the Menaechmi; caused on purpose as in Amphitryon); plays of domestic life (The Merchant, Casina, both unpleasant; Trinummus, Stichus, both pleasant). The Loeb Classical Library edition of Plautus is in five volumes.

House Parts Human Skull in Gilded Gold finish
Vendor: Homedepot.com Price: 42.86 $The human skull inspires a wide range of emotion and symbolizes numerous things to different people and cultures. In much of art, it is a memento mori, expressed in Latin, "remember you are mortal". To many, the skull is a symbol of overcoming fear, as death is the great equalizer. It is a symbol of defiance, in those who live dangerously, because defying death is the ultimate defiance. Still in other cultures, the skull symbolizes not horror, death and destruction but an entrance into the realm of the highest spiritual order with the promise of a new life. Today, this bony structure which encases and protects the brain, inspires wonder. House Parts is pleased to offer the replica of the human skull in the Gilded Gold finish.

Creole World : Photographs of New Orleans and the Latin Caribbean Sphere
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 38.45 $Shotgun houses...vibrant street scenes...grand villas and mansions...colorful facades... they're all part of a historically rich, interconnected Creole world. New Orleans is often hailed for its distinctive Creole heritage--evident in its food, architecture, and people--but it is far from alone. Its creoleness may be unique to the United States, but New Orleans is part of an entire family of Latin Caribbean cities with similar colonial histories. Founded as New World outposts of Old World empires, these cities forged new identities from European, West African, and indigenous influences--by turns inspired by, in defiance of, and adapted from all of them. In Creole World, author and photographer Richard Sexton explores the architectural and urban similarities among these cultural cousins, from Haiti, Colombia, Argentina, Cuba, Bolivia, and Ecuador back home to New Orleans. Setting the stage for the book's two hundred color photographs are essays by Creole-architecture scholar Jay D. Edwards and photography historian John H. Lawrence. Together, they take readers on a fascinating journey across time and place, through the ever-changing Creole world.

Bible in the Latin West (The Medieval Book)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 54.38 $The Bible in the Latin West surveys the changes in the most important book in the western world, the Latin Bible. Dr. Gibson beings the survey in late antiquity, discussing the sumptuous volumes of the great senatorial houses of the fourth century and how they influenced the early great Bibles of northern Europe. The discussion then moves through the Carolingian period, with its increased interest in commentary to early vernacular versions, and goes on to reveal how in the eleventh and twelfth centuries the growing number of monastic and university readers made new demands on texts which led to the inclusion of glosses and other scholarly apparatus. Later, the combined influences of increased literacy and growing wealth among the population called for vernacular translations and devotional aids such as Books of Hours. Gibson completes the survey with a look at early printed Bibles. This is a useful volume for anyone being introduced to the firsthand study of texts and their transmission, as well as for graduate students in history, English, modern languages, classics, and religious studies, The Bible in the Latin West contains an introductory survey, 28 plates with facing descriptions and analyses, a glossary, and extensive bibliographic material.
